Safety Precautions With Drilling and Blasting

Posted on July 24, 2018June 7, 2019 by Louise B. Delia

Drilling and blasting are among one of the more dangerous jobs in the construction world so it is critical to always wear safety gear, maintain the bulk truck, avoid surface entanglements, and have good communication between the driller and blaster. Without these things, you are putting yourself and others at risk to get severely hurt over not abiding by safety regulations of the construction company you are working for, as well as OSHA. To avoid any mistakes and injuries, be sure to do your research on work guidelines and other safety concerns your employer expresses to the company.

Safety Gear

When you are out on the site drilling and blasting the most important safety gear you can wear is your hard hat and safety glasses. These are given to you to help avoid dirt and rocks flying into your eyes or heavy objects hitting you on top of the head. Although the gear does not always keep you from being injured, they always help soften the blow to whatever is coming and could potentially save your life.

Surface Entanglements

Before you start anywhere drilling and blasting salt lake city ut, it is very important to check the area for surface entanglements such as hoses and cords, loose clothing on your body, and cable lines. All of these things could easily wrap around the drill causing an accident. One of the most important parts to this is making sure that you are only wearing tight fitted clothing to avoid your clothes getting caught in the drill while you are working and have serious injuries happen to your body.

Communication is The Key to Safety

Communication between the driller is very important as 281 accidents have occurred since 1978 by workers not communicate clearly on the construction site. Drill logs are an important part of communication on site as the blaster needs information on the area they are blasting. Information normally logged about the area is on the terrain and rocks in the spot that is about to be blasted.

Maintain The Bulk Truck

Weekly examinations and cleaning of a bulk truck can help avoid build up from the smoke and help provide an easier transport for blasting material. By not cleaning the bulk truck, you are risking the truck running improperly with explosive material in tow.

Where drilling and blasting jobs can be very dangerous for anyone onsite, it is important to follow safety guidelines and wear the correct safety gear, communicate from driller to blaster, maintain the bulk truck, and avoid any surface entanglements that could pose a risk to you or others. By following these simple guidelines you are putting yourself at less of a risk for injuries than if you were to go out there with no safety gear or knowledge of what you should be doing to protect yourself. Always keep in mind that when you are skipping over your own safety to speed up the process, you could be putting everyone else onsite at risk too.
